Day 4: Boxcar ESB

An Extra Special Bitter for an extra special day.

The Story:
In a previous life, the location of our brewery was directly in the path of the old E & N Railway which extended from Victoria all the way up to Courtenay.  In fact, tracks still run into our back yard leading right up to our grain silo!  Although the trains have long-since disappeared, Boxcar ESB is our little way of keeping the heritage alive.

Here's a photo from 1948 showing the railyard at our brewery location!

Tasting Notes:
Pours a golden amber colour with a slight white head.  Fresh aromas of pine with hints of citrus give way to a medium malt body that's balanced with a slight hop bitterness.  Finishes clean.

The Package:
Boxcar ESB is exclusively available in the Showcase Mixed packs as a rotating guest.

  1. An Extra Special Beer for an Extra Special Birthday! Okay 43 isn't super special, but this wonderfully balanced beer was a great way to cap off December 4th! Thanks for the present!

  2. Great beer! Too bad it is a rotating guest, could definitely go for a growler of it. Definitely going to hunt for some mixed packs now in hopes of finding some.

  3. I thought it was good. Nice balance, but nothing really stood out for me.

  4. I feel like this beer does not follow the tradition of an "E.S.B." This beer does not disappoint, however, as it packs a powerful yet pleasing hop flavour. The Boxcar is a brew that I would love to see available in liquor stores.

  5. This traditional British tasting bitter is quite the nod to our history in Victoria and Phillips origins in Esquimalt a mere block away from the E&N line.
